10 Surprising things to do in Trier
Trier is one of the most underrated and less famous than most German cities. It has many Roman artefacts and cool museums, bars, and more sights. It also holds some great wine fields. The city is a must-see when in Germany, and it perfectly combines with the city and country of Luxembourg. Keep reading if you want to see the sights of Trier.
1. Admire the amphitheatre of Trier

The amphitheatre of Trier is one of the absolute highlights of the city. It was built around 200 years AD, and the ruins are still visible and easy to visit. You can even see the cellars underneath the amphitheatre itself. Since 1987, the sights have been in a UNESCO World Heritage site. The only downside is that there could be more information.
Price: € 6,-
Tourist occurrence: Medium
How much time needed: 1 hour
2. Enjoy the gorgeous Kaiserthermen

Another fantastic Roman artefact is the Kaiserthermen. In the past they were bathhouses to relax in, but people also had massages and played sports, and now it is great to visit for a moment. It was built in the 4th century AD, and it still stands proudly in the city of Trier. I would say there are better Roman artefacts, but a visit is nice.
Price: € 6,-
Tourist occurrence: Very Low
How much time needed: 10 minutes, but I did not go in.
3. Enjoy the vineyards

One of the coolest things about Trier is the many vineyards around the city. You can do hikes between them, have some great tastings or just admire them from further away. Riesling is the most common grape used here, and that means that a lot of wines are sweet or semi-sweet.
Price: Depending on what you are doing, but hiking is free.
Tourist occurrence: Very Low
How much time needed: Depending on which activities you do.
4. Have a wine at the Weinstube Kesselstadt

If there are vineyards around the city, there should be places to have a taste! The Weinstube Kesselstadt is one of the best places in the city to have a good wine. I do not have the best knowledge about wine, but the staff helped me very well with the different local wines and the food, which all tasted good. The atmosphere was great outside with the plants with grapes in them.
Price: Depending on your order
Tourist occurrence: Medium
How much time needed: 1 hour
5. Enjoy some cultural events

Trier is a city that holds a lot of cultural events, and it is great to visit if you are in Trier. When we were in Trier, there were many podiums with music and stalls for food and drinks. Cultural events are fantastic to be with locals and understand local culture, a true pleasure.
Price: Often free
Tourist occurrence: Low
How much time needed: Depending on the event
6. Visit the Trierer Dom

One of the most important sights in Trier is the Trierer Dom, an impressive cathedral built around 350 AD. You can admire the gorgeous architecture of the outside of the building, but do not miss the inside, as it is also fantastic to explore. This is a building you cannot miss in Trier.
Price: Free
Tourist occurrence: Medium
How much time needed: 30 minutes to admire both the inside as the outside.
7. See many beautiful buildings in the Hauptmarkt

The main square of Trier is the Hauptmarkt, where there are many gorgeous houses, churches, and statues. The buildings are in the Bavarian architecture, which is very cool in my opinion. You cannot miss this square when visiting Trier. There are also some bars and restaurants on the square, but most are a bit touristic. One of the highlights of the square is the wine bar in the middle of the square called Weinstand Trier, where you cannot sit but has a fantastic atmosphere.
Price: Free
Tourist occurrence: High
How much time needed: 30 minutes, but if you take a wine, you will stay a bit longer
8. Have a craft beer in Craftprotz Kreativbierbar

If you are into craft beer, Craftprotz Kreativbierbar is the perfect place to go. They have many local and other craft beers on draught, but they also have many cans and bottles. In my opinion, you should take a flight, so you have smaller beers, but you can taste different styles. The service was very friendly.
Price: Free, but the beer are not
Tourist occurrence: Low
How much time needed: 1-2 hours, depending on the amount of beers you want to have.
9. Observe the beautiful Porta Nigra

In my opinion the Porta Nigra is the most beautiful building in Trier. The building is very impressive and was built in 170 AD by the Romans as a city wall. You can walk underneath the building, which gives an interesting other view of the building. You can also buy a ticket, but I did not do it, as I do not think it is necessary. This Roman building is one of the most important must-dos in Trier.
Price: Free from the outside it is free, but admission fee is € 6,-
Tourist occurrence: High
How much time needed: 30 minutes to admire the outside and walk underneath. If you want to go in, I do not know how much time is needed.
10. Learn about Karl Marx in the Karl Marx Haus

The most important museum of Trier is the Karl Marx Haus, which is located in the house where he was born. The museum mostly talks about the influence of communism (the philosophy of Marx), but I hoped there was more explanation about the thoughts of communism. However, this is a great museum to visit in Trier, as the influence is very interesting.
Price: € 5,-
Tourist occurrence: Medium
How much time needed: 1-2 hours

The numbers in the map correspond with the number of the highlight.
Things I have not done, but could be cool
I think I saw the most important sights, but you can also visit more museums or vineyards.
