16 cool things to do in Luxembourg

This page about Luxembourg is mostly about the capital of the country instead of the country itself. The capital is small but interesting, as there are several levels, which give some views over the city, and you have to walk a bit more. The free(!) public transport is very convenient, and this will give you an option of staying outside the city. Check out the best things to do in Luxembourg!

1. Enjoy the great views from Chemin de la Corniche

Personally, this is my favourite thing to do in Luxembourg! Chemin de la Corniche is often called "the most beautiful balcony in the world", and I really understand why. The views from here of the lower parts of town are absolutely stunning, and you can watch them for hours. Sometimes a train passes on the other side of the town, which gives a little extra excitement. You can walk the balcony and see different perspectives. This is an absolute must-do in Luxembourg!

2. Enjoy a drink with a view at De Gudde Wellen

If you want to have a nice drink with a view of the city of Luxembourg, De Gudde Wellen is a great option. The atmosphere is fantastic, as there is table service and the people are very kind. The view is the highlight, as it is almost part of the Chemin de la Corniche. Note that they only serve drinks and that they are only opened when it is good weather. This is a great spot in Luxembourg.

3. Find some cultural events

Of course, this may be tough to plan, but you can sometimes run into some cultural events inside the city centre. We randomly saw a Portuguese (many Portuguese inhabitants) event outside the centre with some live music and some food stalls. This was a lucky hit, but it happens often in the city, as it is the only city which has been voted the "cultural capital of Europe" twice!

4. Find important building like the Palace and the court

Luxembourg is a city with gorgeous buildings throughout the city. It is a treasure to walk around and see the gorgeous city. There are also important buildings to see, like the courthouse and the palace of the king. This may not be something you do on purpose, but you will find them when visiting Luxembourg.

5. Walk around different parts of town

You will definitely walk the different parts of the city centre with its lovely different levels, where you walk between (although doing it too often will tire you), but you can also visit the outskirts. The city is pretty small, so you are quickly in different parts, and there you will find some more local habits.

6. Enjoy a coffee at Kaale Kaffi

Kaale Kaffi is one of the most fun places I have visited. They have a lovely terrace where the chairs are almost all different and cosy. The manager was really fun and relaxed. The inside has a high atmosphere with a lot of colours with romantic light. You can go for a coffee, but they also have alcohol.

7. Enjoy the lovely nature that surrounds the city

The city of Luxembourg is lovely, but you should also visit the area that surrounds the city. The nature is lovely with hilly forests with fantastic trees and rocks. The hikes in the area can be tough, as there are some elevation differences, but that makes the environment very interesting. The forests are very green and quiet. Make sure you do not miss the nature around the city.

8. With some luck you can even find wildlife

When visiting the lovely nature, keep an eye out for local wildlife. We were very lucky to find a roe deer on the edge of the forests. There are also wild pigs, foxes, red deer, snakes, lizards, and way more. Of course, you need luck to find wildlife, but it is absolutely possible when you are out in the forests.

9. Check out the gorgeous station

Although there is an airport very close to the city, most people will arrive at the train station. And if you come here, do not leave too fast, as the station is very pretty, as it looks like a church. It is worth just having a look at the inside and the outside of the building. Although it is not too important to see, it is a lovely start of the city.

10. Party

Luxembourg is a very decent country, is it not? Well, yes! Except one area. East of the city centre there is a party area, which is open all week, but it is absolutely not my favourite area, as it has very loud music and is expensive. The bars are very touristy and the lights trashy, but if you do fancy it, check it out!

Price: Depending on the place, but mostly free

Tourist occurrence: Low

How much time needed: One night or not as it is not too great

11. Remember victims at Gëlle Fra

Gëlle Fra is a monument on one of the most important squares of the city. The monument is placed here for the victims of the First World War, but it was destroyed by the Germans during the Second World War. Now she is thriving in a fantastic area in Luxembourg.

12. Enjoy a stroll in Grund

In the lower part of Luxembourg may be the most gorgeous area of the city, called Grund. You have to go down from the city centre and enjoy the surroundings. There are fewer bars and restaurants than in the upper level, but the area is very gorgeous and one of the absolute highlights of the city.

13. Have a meal at Konrad Cafe

Konrad Café is one of the best places we visited in Luxembourg. The bar is pretty alternative and has many trendy options. The interior is very cool with different cool parts. Outside you will sit very lovely in a cute alley. The food is a bit Lebanese with different influences, and the service is very friendly.

14. Visit the underground world at Pétrusse Casemates

Pétrusse Casemates is a fantastic sight in Luxembourg. The entrance is located next to Gëlle Fra, and this sight is a must-do. It was built in 1644, and throughout the years, it functioned as a defence for the city. When not in war, there have been parties and other events. Now it is a museum, which you can walk to. Although it is a bit expensive for what you will see, it is very cool.

15. Walk under the Adolphe Bridge

Although the name of the bridge is not very convenient since the forties, it is a highlight to visit. The bridge is very cool, as you can walk or bike underneath the big bridge. You walk next to the gorgeous bows of the building, and you will have cool views. The bridge is also gorgeous from a distance.

16. Enjoy some food from Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a small country but has a surprisingly good cuisine. It has the highest density of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world (in competition with San Sebastián). The cuisine has the most influences from the German and French cuisines and even a bit of Belgian, which makes it a very cool and interesting cuisine. Try one of the many restaurants that serve local food.

The numbers correspond with the numbers in the map. Note that the station a bit further south and nature is further away around the city.

Things I have not done, but could be cool

I think I covered most of the cool things to do in Luxembourg, but I heard that I missed a cool area close to the station, unfortunately.

Final thoughts

Luxembourg has surprised me, as it is a very beautiful city with different levels, which makes it very interesting. It is not a city or country where you can stay for weeks, as you can see most of its sights in 24 hours. The country is not the most thrilling, as everything looks perfect, and sometimes you want to see some more raw or alternative features, but the country is worth a visit, especially in combination with surrounding countries.
